Some people will buy the thing because it's cool as hell, and it saves a ton of electricity. The price will come down as other manufacturers incorporate some of the features and production increases.

When I bought this house last year, I installed LED bulbs in almost every fixture. Yeah, it cost a bit, but hell....I was buying a house, so I was spending some cash anyway. I hate compact fluorescent, they annoy the hell out of me, and I also hate changing light bulbs when they burn out. So LED was the right way to go. Took a bit to get used to them, the light isn't quite "right" at first, but you adjust....never even notice the difference now.

LED lights are great because bugs aren't attracted to them. They can't see the light frequency or some shit. I heard this from bear grills watching man vs wild, thought it was bs then tried it myself.

Anyway you should at least replace your outdoor flood lights with them for this reason only.

(sigh) Another thread gets trolled by brain dead Liberals who really think 50 bucks is an affordable light bulb. They really think a FOB earned that reward, even when there are bulbs out there at half the cost. I really hope the Liberals here live to see it all fall down. Not that they would remember how wrong they were. Liberals have this way of forgetting when they were wrong. I expect them to be out their burning down things to protest government not giving them things.

Flat screens used to be unaffordable to most people too. Was that also the fault of liberals? No need to worry though, the awesome conservatives eventually brought prices down by using magic.

PS. Should i bother bookmarking this thread so we can revisit it after the price has fallen and you look dumb again?

I use LED lights as well. No one had to make me do it. I did it because I wanted to do it. Less heat and less cost. I live in Yuma, less heat is even good in the winter. (Sitting next to an open window right with no shirt on.) Someone else might not think this would work for them. I like them to have a choice.

The issue is giving a company 11 million dollars for making an affordable light bulb. I could not call 50 bucks affordable. Yes, it the price might go down. I would not being against giving them the reward when it did. American made, I like that. There is a lot to like about rewards like this. I will not give someone a reward for being the first to break the 3 minute mile if they only run half a mile. Face it; this is just another Obama scam to pay off his "friends". The fact that most of these disasters were started by FOB should set off alarm bells with anyone, even liberals. Once again I overestimated liberals. When will I learn?

There are three kind of liberals;
Stupid, ignorant or evil
The result is always evil but the intent is not always evil. Not that it makes much difference in the long run.

Philips is one of the largest manufacturers of lighting in the world. They had something like 30 billion dollars in sales last year..so 10 million is what they spend on lunch, not a payoff.

Price and green technology feasebility have nothing to do with each other, Califorians will be thrilled to pay 30-50% more in power bills to support green tech.

posted: Energy legislation signed by President George W. Bush in 2007 introduced a ban on inefficient incandescent light bulbs, covering traditional 100-watt bulbs this year. Sales of traditional 75-watt incandescents will be prohibited next year, and 60-watt incandescents will go after that.

When replacing a bulb, consumers must now go out and buy energy-efficient incandescent, compact fluorescent and LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs, in a compulsory transition that has prompted some conservatives to characterize the law as an unfair burden on consumers and an “issue of freedom,” as Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) put it.

The L Prize was meant to ease this transition by enticing manufacturers to create affordable bulbs to replace the most common type, the traditional 60-watt.

posted: Still, the contest set price goals. According to the L Prize guidelines, manufacturers were “strongly encouraged to offer products at prices that prove cost-effective and attractive to buyers, and therefore more successful in the market.” The target retail price, including rebates from utilities, was to be $22 in the first year, $15 in the second year and $8 in the third year.

Energy Department officials defended the award, saying that they expect the cost of the L Prize bulbs to drop over time. “The L Prize competition played a critical role in driving manufacturing and engineering innovations in the U.S. lighting industry and helping to make the next generation of energy-saving LED lighting options more affordable for consumers,” said department spokeswoman Niketa Kumar.
