He died.
Later in the series the man who he squared off against had a role in the foreground of the story. Sword vs broken stick. Not good. I was impressed by an author who could kill off such an engaging character so early on. Made me confident that there would be more interesting character concepts later on.

afaik there are to be 7 total, but that may have been before book 4 was made into 2 books

Yeah, supposedly there are to be two more, but I have a hard time seeing Martin (who has diarrhea of the pen) finishing it up in two more, or at all.

He still could have survived. Just because your opponent lives does not mean you die.

The only characters I liked immediately and managed to continue to like are Arya, Jamie and Petyr.
I like Sansa character on an intellectual level for what she adds to the story.
I used to like Tyrion but he was so meh in the last book and the 500 pages worth of his boring travel log soured me to him and his chapters.
I didn't like Cersei at first but I like her more now.
I always liked Joffrey, I laughed out loud whenever he did something horrible.
I didn't mind Daenerys in the beginning but she is easily the worst character in the series now. An entire book of her sitting there doing nothing just to have some insipid deus ex machina revelation in the last chapter was enough to alienate me forever. That last book soured me to a lot of things.

Arya is my favorite character of the series. In the last book, I flipped through the pages before I read the book, to see how many times she would show up. I think she is going to play a very big part in the series before its all over.
Tyrion is a solid 2nd place.
As for Arya's "water dancing" instructor, the book never really said for sure that he died. It would certianly seem so, but I am hoping to be proven wrong.

Littlefinger is by far the most interesting character. Not really sure what hes doing. Im not sure if hes a genius or a psychopath.
