Been a while since I read the first book. I thought it cut away before he actually died like in the series. So you don't know for sure.

He at first took a few enemies with a wooden sword. He wasnt even at his peak. Years ago he couldven taken them I bet

All the great movies and tv shows are character driven not special effects or action driven. This is what HBO focuses on in their mini series I think.
