There's a lot of debate on that view among the 'Christian' camp.
A fair majority of people I know that categorize themselves as 'Christian' are okay with people who are gay, to some varying degree. There are a small handful, however, who fall strictly opposed to gays, citing Bible verses about sodomy and so on, ranting about how gays are hell-bound and subhuman, and a few even go so far as to suggest more...extreme...measures.
For most things, these people are rather decent overall. I have a hard time associating with them, though, due to their severe issues with gays. Some of my better friends are gay.

Theyre ignorant, like racists. They dont really have a good reason for hating them.
There are a lot of sins too... It says something when they make such a big deal about that particular "sin".

Christians shouldn't be worried with the "sins" of anyone. They don't matter.
Jesus didn't call them to judge. He called them to comfort and love.
Most Christians are way too hung up on Heaven, Hell and sin. Real or imagined none of those things are going to make right now better, and making right now better will win over more people than the promise of a reward, or punishment, after your life is over.

It's a lot more than a small handful. Maybe where you live it is that way, but the vast Christians I have met, in various parts of the country, are not for homosexuality. Some may be polite and treat me normally, but in their view I am a sinner and god definitely isn't going be happy with me. They're brainwashed by their bigoted spiritual leader in most cases.
You can't paint it as a small minority misrepresenting the view of the many. It is not that way.
