Most people in Israel are secular. The people living in the settlements are all religious fundamentalists. The Israelis themselves worry about the people living in the settlements

The situation is more complicated than either party is making out.
Targeted assassinations are a long-standing party of Israel's military policy and they are very problematic, mainly because they arn't actually targeted.

Is that worse than randomly firing missiles into populated areas or strapping bombs to kids to blow up other kids?
If Israel stopped retaliating the missiles would continue regardless. This has already been tried.
If the missiles stopped Israel wouldn't retaliate. This has never been tried.

Israel didn't arrest terrorists that killed UN envoy. Quite the contrary, they made one of them prime minister.
