In other words, you haven't been actively watching your 401k. YTD return for DJIA is 8.16%.
Hell, even the 5yr return is 7.61%.

the labor participation rate has been falling for decades.
Or maybe it is a sign that the government is fudging numbers, and that a lot of jobs have gone underground to illegal alien invaders.

What? The wealth gap has suddenly disappeared? ...

We don't measure unemployment the same now as we did in the 30's or the 80's. You hide a lot of unemployment now. You can't compare the rates directly.
How is it different?
No time to look it up, but basically until the 80's we essentially used U6 as the unemployment rate. Now we use U3. Presto, millions of unemployed are now NOT unemployed. Magic.
Nobody actually measured this stuff in the 30's. It wasnt until the after WW2 that the gov't started collecting this information. Great Depression era numbers are entirely the work of researchers trying to estimate a number using limited information.
People frequently make the argument that the gov't is hiding unemployment. This is pretty obviously false since the U6 measurement exists and both measurements are pretty clearly described.
edit - the 80's did not use U6 as the official unemployment rate. The official rate in the 80's was basically the same as the calculation used now. Those not working divided by those actively seeking work. This is another one of those myths thats out there...

Citigroup was one of four large US banks that flunked stress tests aimed at seeing how they would hold up in a new economic crisis, Federal Reserve data showed Tuesday.
Three others -- Ally, Suntrust and MetLife -- also failed the tests, while 15 other large bank holding companies passed the exercise, the Fed said.

So what's so funny? The other 15 are in great shape. Only 4 still have some work to do. Yet somehow, in that peabrain of yours, that is an indication the economy isn't doing better?

Gas prices are important to people that vote. I think it would be a mistake to discount that. The culture war is stupid. Thats not going to sway the middle, the people the decide elections. Unemployment is still very high. There are a lot of people still looking for work that want to work.
The republicans would easily walk into the WH if they didn't field such morons.
