So of course this time around they focus on pet causes for the religious right instead. 
Hopefully we'll end up with split houses of congress and neither side will be able to do anything for at least 2 years.

When Republicans can convince stupid people that they care about debt and they want smaller government...they win.
True enough, but then they do exactly the opposite as soon as they get in power and they end up losing again. You would think people would learn....but then, they are stupid.
I used to be amazed at how god damn idiotic people in the US can be, finally accepted the fact that it's not an aberration, it's working as intended.
The people in power want Americans to be idiots, and for the most part, they got their wish.

When the recession came federal tax revenue went down which made the debt go way up. The Republicans blamed the debt problem on Obama and his stimulus while ignoring the impacto of the recession and Bush's stimulus, unfunded wars, and tax cuts.
So you are right, the Republicans didn't just blame Dems for the recession but also other stuff.
It is no surprise that you want to repeat this triumph of ignorance over reason.

Actually the Republicans blew their wad last August. Remember all that stuff about shutting down the gubmint because there weren't enough cuts?
Americans like the idea of focusing on the debt and shrinking gubmint but they turned on the Republicans when the Republicans tried to hold the country hostage and force a default if they didn't get what they wanted.

I don't think it was the debt standoff as much as it has been the harsh dealing with reworking union contracts, right to work, and all things related.
