There are web sites that track these things.
You are right in so much as the down off the peak is less when a dem is in office but either way... Gas prices peak during the summer months. Consumption...

I'm happy I'm in a bracket where it isn't causing hardship.
However, I'm aware it is hiking the price of pretty much every damned thing I buy. I've watched prices on groceries and other items shoot up just this last week or so. The hedged fuel is finally starting to run out.

We went to New Orleans yesterday to go to Audubon Zoo. We were amazed at all the different license plates we saw.
We got there around 10:30 and there was a small crowd, by the time we were done, you were packed in like sardines. When we went to go eat dinner, there was a 30-40 minute wait.
Next we are planning a trip to Bellingrath Gardens near Mobile.

Even if it's up by $1, that comes out to a whole maybe 20 to 50 dollars a month for most people. I can't see how 20 to 50 dollars more a month will break anyone that isn't already being hurt by the economy. So it's probably mental.
edit: People like romney or obama will never be able to relate to anybody that has difficulty coming up with an extra $100 a month.. I doubt they've had to worry about $100 since they were in high school.
This is a person that cant see past thier own nose.
That $50 a month is just for gas. Add in the effects at the grocery store and you are going to multiply this by ( i guess ) 3-4x.
Milk in my area was $2.99 a gallon 2 months ago..its now up to $3.58. Meat prices have skyrockets as it costs more to get feed to the cows, etc, etc, etc.
I have 2 boys that go thru milk like its crack.

People who get mad at the president over gas prices are the same sort of people who used to get mad at the king when it didn't rain for 90 days.
Gas prices are an excellent illustration of the limits of human psychology.
