totally relevant and cool IMO. I imagine my job having a "message board" clause in our employee handbook fifteen years ago. If you have a public persona your employer has a right to understand it IMO.

I would think this would be against the law? you being knowledgeable about it, how is this passing?

What's illegal about it?

You can't discriminate against people based on their race or their marital status because we have laws that say you can't.

We don't have any laws that say you can't refuse to hire someone because they're a douche on facebook or that it's an invasion of privacy to ask to look at their FB wall.

There probably should be laws about asking to see your private correspondence of all types, but afaik there arn't.

a lot of jobs will run a credit check on you. definitely a background check and drug test. in the big scheme, this isn't much different.

all of you morons want to put everything about yourselves on facebook ad advertise t the world that you like some retarded product. you can't expect something to be 100% ubiquitous when you want it but stay hidden when you don't.

i dont care if they background check.. they just shouldnt require private data like passwords.

publically available data and stuff required to prove you get paid what you say youre paid, etc.. is fine.

i think you have to sign a waiver for the background check.

you do. would it be different if you had to sign a waiver for them to see your facebook account?

private data should remain private.

they can get sued for discrimination if they open certain doors..

for instance, they might find out youre in an inter-racial relationship or that youre homosexual (or any other protected class); then if they decide not to offer tou a job theyll have to prove its not because of those illegal reasons.

seems like playing with fire.

When I worked at the casino..I was in high security. Not only did they run a background check on me..they ran one on my husband..and i had to provide them with all my family members names and addresses.

I thought that was a little much. But they actually follow up on all of it.

You couldn't work that particular job if you had family members that had a criminal record.

I refuse to hire someone that's a total spaz or a douche. reading someone's facebook wall would probably make determining that pretty easy.

You don't need someone's login info to see what they write on their wall.

They want the user/pw to check it themselves

I use a fake name, and I don't have anyone employment related (or reference related) on my friends list. And I have a false-front page with my real name and about 4 friends, that we all use for inane harmless posts.

I'd just give them the 2nd one.
