This is a problem that afflicts the NHL, as well.

There was a study done recently by a group of doctors who created a device that looked like a neckguard. What it did is kept fluid inside the skull, preventing the brain from moving around on impact. On testing, it dramatically reduced injuries to the brain. It acted like a helmet between the skull and the brain. This is only lab results, so very preliminary, but if all it takes to protect the brain (and not cause other kinds of problems) is a simple neckguard, that would be amazing.

The NHL also tested this season softer equipment with a few players, because the suggestion is that super hard equipment is partly to blame.

If the odds of head injuries were 3 times as high 90% of the players would still choose to play.

If you believe in liberty then you would let them.

This is a serious problem. Also the NFL needs to crack down on the bounty systems. Deliberately trying to injure a player to put him out of the game should be discouraged

Yeah I just don't think this has to do with the players. The public won't want to see people with such brain injuries.

The generation that basically made the NFL is just now getting to the point where these symptoms are arising.

I'm serious about my suggestion to implement a maximum weight for NFL players. College too actually.

Size has been like an arms race for the last 50 years. People realized being bigger was an important advantage. So players went from being 220 to 240 to 260 and so on. Now it's not uncommon to have a couple offensive linemen over 350.

I'd cap linemen at 240 and everyone else at 215.

less size = less power

less power = less injuries

And not only would it not restrict who could play, it would actually open up the game to more players. You wouldn't have to be a gigantic physical freak in order to play.

Helmets will become integrated with the shoulder pads. This will help transfer the shock to your torso.

Of course that will limit turning your head. Maybe an inner helmet sliding inside an outer one, with the outer one braced to your shoulders?

Rule changes due to injury prevention has already changed the game from what it was when I was young. One or two big lawsuits and settlements will also result in further changes. It's a violent game and as a society we no longer accept the fact that injuries come with that violence.

Lawsuits won't change the game, it will just make all of the players sign wavers.
