People mine coal and risk death and endure certain lung disease and early death while doing so...all for a decent amount of money and a nice middle class life.

Why in the hell do you think people will forgo the ability to earn millions, hundreds of millions even, to play a game...because they might get some brain trauma?

People have been destroying their bodies to make a living since the first guy with a stick found out he could usually beat something to eat to death with it. Everyone dies, a lot of people end up crippled on the way there.

Big effing deal.

Coalminers don't spend 24 years working for free before they start earning money.

Poet is right about change coming. It'll come at the local levels - pee-wee, middle school, high school, even college. The NFL actually won't be involved til much later.

Honestly, I don't think it will be the players that force the change. You are right many will risk injury for money.

I think it will be more from parents of kids, schools, etc.

One very graphic nationally televised injury would also push the conversation in that direction.

And what if we see some of our most beloved stars - on tv drooling form brain injuries.

That would also do it.

If you watched the Pro Bowl this year, then you saw how this year will be played. But then that's just my thought.

That's already happened. They have new rules for kids now that play all sports including football. I have three nephews (9, 11, and 13) that play football, soccer, basketball, and baseball. In football they put people are certain positions because of weight and size. They have new rules about concussions and they are really strict.

Pro football will change slightly in the rules that govern hits, but there will be major equipment changes that the 10 billion dollar industry will force. Nothing ever very drastic happens. Stop being a drama queen Poet.

I don't really care to be honest. I rarely watch football. It's really boring to me.

People get injured playing sports. Kids get injured playing sports. Hell, they get paralyzed, even killed. Have been forever. Hell, if you weren't getting your bell rung once in a while, you weren't playing hard enough back when I was in school. I'm sure that attitude isn't as openly displayed these pussified days, but also sure kids still get their bells rung constantly despite that.

People work on roofs, in mines, as lumberjacks, fishermen, police officers, power line maintenance...and so on. All more dangerous than playing football, and all make a hell of a lot less. No one gives a damn, they chose to do those jobs for whatever reason, just like people chose to play sports.

Life is dangerous, it's a game that everyone loses eventually. We can improve the odds, work to make it safer, but in the end....you take your chances, make your choices, and deal with the consequences.

We've had plenty of major sports stars injured or killed in gruesome ways, they didn't stop playing the game because of it, nor will they.

Still the game can't continue as it has been. You may be right that they will find some sort of miracle equipment to save the game, but widespread lawsuits and injuries will force it to change.
