They seem less insipid than CNN. More watchable because it's less phony. Plus the Al Shaprton commercials are awesome.

They're coverage of the Republican primary is what you would expect, but the Obamacare coverage that I had seen was in my opinion fair.

I made the switch from CNN to MSNBC a little over a year ago. It's much better.
Fwiw, I mostly watch Morning Joe and Hardball. Occasionally I'll watch Maddow.

MSNBC is every bit the biased, condescending piece of crap that Fox is.
I'll listen to NPR and a couple of blog sites to get the "liberal" side and concerns so I can go investigate across multiple sites when I hit an issue on which I think I need some education.
I have several blogs I use to get a bead on "conservative" concerns that I then go research.
I watch the freakin' BBC (sad) for general US news for survey purposes.
If I had a billion dollars, I would start a news network that actually IS unbiased and gives 2 or 3 sides of every story. I can't imagine how much time it would save people like me weekly. Hours.

Morning Joe is the best morning news and entertainment show on TV. By far.
Sure, Joe is still a crazed right wing nut bag....at times. But he is much more fair than he used to be, and the other people on the show keep his ass from going too far off into nut bag land. He is actually likable and attempts to be open minded now. It's a great dynamic for the show, you can see him working hard not to be crazy most of the time. He busts down hard if any guest tries to get away with crazy crap as well, doesn't matter if they are crazy liberal or crazy "conservative" either. One of the few hosts on TV who refuses to let the "experts" lie thru their teeth all the time.
The news shows they produce are fairly middle of the road, they miss the same stuff all the other networks news shows miss, repeat all the same stupid rumors, and cover the same "stories"......fairly decent news by today's standards. You wont actually learn anything, but you will know that some stuff is happening, even if you don't quite understand what it means.
Their political stuff (starts at around 4PM I think) is all commentary and opinions. While a couple of those shows are very well researched and intelligent (Madow in particular) it is all from a liberal perspective and not worth watching unless you like to cheer your team on or are wanting some in depth info that is easier to find and more complete on the interweb. I haven't watched any of them in years, though I will catch a clip on youtube from time to time.
In short, MSNBC is a much better news station than CNN, but it's still full of opinion crap instead of actual news for most of the day (not to mention nothing but prison stories all weekends). For real news in the evenings, I listen to BBC. CNN is absolutely dreadful these days. It's like they want to be FOX...but don't have the balls.

It is astoundingly pitiful that, typing at the same time, Ptilk and I both admit we watch another country's news cast in order to get something APPROACHING even-handed news about the US.

I watch Chris Matthews pretty regularly. I like Maddow, but, I don't like wading through an hour of Ed to get to her, so, I usually just turn the TV off or switch to Netflix streaming. I don't do mornings, so I haven't seen much of Morning Joe. From the clips I've seen, he seems to be pretty fair minded.
