I assumed that the age of consent in most states if not all was 16. Apparently she was a teacher at his school who also happened to be a cheerleader which may have changed the legality.

The age of consent is utterly irrelevant in this case. The kid could have been 18 and she'd still be going to jail. The highlighted bit is why.

Actually chief, the age of consent in canada is 14. This never would have made it to court here.
Well, the teacher thing may have done her in here too.. but an adult banging a 16 year old if they both consent? non issue.
