Perhaps to help you understand it would be helpful to ask the question in a different way.
How would you react if your child doused themselves with gasoline and started to flick a lighter? Would you just love them unconditionally and hope for the best? Have some scotch and perhaps argue with him over the actions they are partaking in?
Because *if* you believe that your child will experience incomprehensible suffering for all of eternity; then for a Christian to simply doing nothing so as not to appear a douche bag is the same thing as ignoring your child about to burn him or herself to death for an Atheist.
You can't understand Christians mode of thinking because you don't believe what they believe. The difference is what you believe in ends in nothing so it is easy to blow off.
This kind of God is exactly the type I could *never* support, no matter what - the kind that says 'follow this specific religion or suffer eternally.'
This would mean that you're basically playing the lottery with religions vs. suffering.
YOU believe you're following the right one...but so does every other religion. How would you feel if you were wrong, and you were going to suffer because you aren't <insert religion here>? Would you not feel cheated, that you picked a religion and worshipped faithfully, all to suffer because you didn't pick the right stick from the pile?
