Perhaps to help you understand it would be helpful to ask the question in a different way.
How would you react if your child doused themselves with gasoline and started to flick a lighter? Would you just love them unconditionally and hope for the best? Have some scotch and perhaps argue with him over the actions they are partaking in?
Because *if* you believe that your child will experience incomprehensible suffering for all of eternity; then for a Christian to simply doing nothing so as not to appear a douche bag is the same thing as ignoring your child about to burn him or herself to death for an Atheist.
You can't understand Christians mode of thinking because you don't believe what they believe. The difference is what you believe in ends in nothing so it is easy to blow off.

My child doesn't need to follow any path I decided to take. They can choose for themselves... that is, either to be an atheist or very devout, of which I'm neither.
However, I will have them baptized and do all the paperwork crap because honestly, it's a pain to do as an adult.  I say this after having been recently married through the Catholic church. What they believe is up to them.

My children are also completely in control of what they believe. I can't make them believe anything. Every person has free will. They have been exposed to the Christian faith and its teachings. None of that means that if one were to come to me and tell me they are an Atheist that I would not attempt to work on them over time to the best of my ability. I sure might not succeed but to not try is to not love them of which I do very much.
For me not do try with what I believe goes right back to what any parent would do if their child was about to seriously harm or kill themselves, we would interject. The disconnect between non-believers and believers is that one side does not view the situation with any feeling at all and the other views it as more paramount than death itself. That chasm lends itself to the rather strong feelings that end up in conversations/arguments between the two groups.
Everyone can understand saving your child from great harm in this life and if you want to know what Christians are thinking on the Atheist thing just transfer that feeling x1000 as it pertains to their soul. The motivation is self explanatory.

Even Manegarm will be baptized by the Mormons after he is dead. They love Atheists. Though smoke may rise from his grave site he will be cleansed!
