I have a crazy jesus guy on my facebook. He always posts pictures and memes about jesus and such.
The other day he posted one with a close up of jesus' head, staring at you, bloody with the crown of thorns, with a big I LOVE YOU on the bottom.
Ridiculous.

The transcendence of pain has been used by a variety of faiths to show one's piety.
Plus it makes for a good show.
