The one idea I really like behind GW2's 3 servers facing off is that you won't run into as many balance issues caused by things like aesthetics and realm-based themes. Even in daoc's 3-way war there has always been a population imbalance with alb coming out on top.

I doubt every GW 2 server will have the same population, so population imbalance will still be an issue. I don't know if they have any plans to only match up servers with similar populations. It would seem inevitable though that they'll run into some match ups where you'll have 2 medium/large servers and 1 small server.

Yeah... Imbalances will always happen but I think their option will minimize the factors involved is all. Really it will lack the diversity I have come to enjoy from daoc and will probably lack the other things that make daoc great but at least its a step in the right direction for pvp mmos.

Everyone is so hyped about the release of GW2. Its going to let you down almost as bad as Warhammer Online did just because your putting it on a pedestal already.

Have a back up so you wont get kicked in the face again.

I actually expect it to suck. I just like that they are trying a different and hopefully better approach. I am sure GW2 is still going to be primarily an arena game since they had said early on that world pvp was only there to be a casual environment for people to use for learning classes and abilities while they build up enough skill to fight in arena. Oh... and I hate arena games.

They haven't released enough GW2 WvW details yet to know what will or wont be. I know better than to go gooey fangurrl before solid details are out but I did get to play the demo at PAX and the PvE is going to be a pleasantly enjoyable casual yet intense and beautiful experience so its at least got that going for it.

It sounds like ANET has a plan for easy transfers between servers that does not impact WvW so I wouldn't be too worried about population balance issues. DAoC is unquie in its 40 some classes because it has never meant to be balanced 1 to 1 or team to team whereas a game like Guild Wars that has highly competitive arena based play has to have balance. For GW2 they got rid of the 2ndary class system just to try and make balance easier since there will continue to be a competitive arena option but I think the WvW stuff, even though touted as good for casuals, will see a lot of serious play and may even end up bringing back some of those old school realm pride feelings from the early Dark Ages days. I can hope can't I?

I'd rather fight different classes/races than my own realm's, but it could be fun.

This.

Each side (all 3) should be unique and that is the gem that we know as DAoC atm.Otherwise its blue team versus green team versus red team and thats bleh.

The World PvP is suppose to be open for everyone. It is casual friendly enough because it breaks the barriers of being singled out in a group just because you don't have a specific skill set or a minimum rank. There are objectives for solo, groups and army size of players. It's not a preparation for the arenas since the rules are different. It must be a a very old interview since they don't iterate this anymore. The arenas is e-sport style of pvp. You can join in the arena at any level in fact, all your gears including your level is equalized (maxed out), and your skills unlocked and typically the goal would be to eliminate the other team. In World PvP, you join in with whatever your character's status is currently and you'll have a variety of objectives if you wish to do them. There is also tournaments, guild battles and capture the flag, those are competitive pvp.

Pretty sure this isn't going to be much of an issue in GW2, because from what I've read, they're going to rotate the servers, as in the first week will be Percival v Lancelot v Iseult, then the next week, Percival is gonna get rotated into another 'group' and it will be Lancelot v Iseult v Bedevere instead and it's gonna keep being rotated every week to avoid a server dominating one 'group' of servers.

Edit: This of course breeds the possibility of 1 or 2 less populated servers getting matched up against a server twice their size, but then again, it'll only last them for a week. Which I say is a fair tradeoff for the sake of not having to fight against that dominant server for the next month or two.

Guild wars 2 is going to be 3 realms as well, except they're having the realms be servers instead.

So instead of Alb vs Mid vs hib, you'll end up with Merlin vs Lancelot, vs Perc

they group 3 different servers together and have them fight it out in a frontier.

I've talked this feature to death with everyone I know and yet I still feel the urge to add

this is freaking epic!!!!

Meh. Each "realm" is going to have the same classes/races, which will probably get old after a while.

I don't think having different classes in each realm is too important. Look at what happened to DAOC, we used to have different classes in each realm but now so many unique abilities have been given to other classes in other realms, that the differences are pretty negligible now.

To be fair though most of those "unique realm abilities" inbalanced the game. Had they have been implemented smarter then I would agree with your sentiment. Yet this wasn't even close to being the case as something was implemented, gave a large advantage and left the other side without any way of combating said ability using strategies and/or what they already have to work with. End Regen being a prime example. Back when shamans were the only ones to have it, it made a HUGE difference. Endurance actually meant something back then and all of their toons being able to perma sprint and style endlessly was a big deal. Not to mention it had no range and was conq based. If the classes are interesting in their own right I don't need 20+ unique and individual characters. I like both sides of the coin in other words.
