I love it when people say "wrong dude". So, I guess PLing, bots, radar, nerfed PvE (completely unnecessary now days), pathetic crafting system, free flawless templates which combined with 2 days of PLing stack a toon and to top it all off Mythic forcing people to play their game how Mythic wanted them to play. Not simply letting people play the game the way they desired to play.
OK, yea, it's just old. Nobody was ever alienated and forced to play against their desired game-play. I can't tell you how many people I know that left the game because they were RvR players that couldn't get the ToA gear they needed.
.
So nerfing PvE is bad and people left because they couldn't handle doing PvE. No win situation there.
When were free perfect temps introduced?

I don't think it's fair to say a game that is still around after 9 years a failure. Could it be even more successful than it is now if Mythic had made better choices along the way? Most definitely. But I doubt there really was anything they could have done that would have stopped large numbers of players from going to WOW when that was released.

New players definitely don't feel the love of the old days. Actually still have new players every now and again. I agree that /level should take a hike, but then I've got me some 50's. hehe. I'd like to see them bring back the old advisor system, only maybe the advisor could actually make a temp character at the new player's level to run through some battles with them and show them the ropes. I'd sign up for that. I already do that but I usually have to catch them when they're first starting out, or wait until they hit the magic level 20. hehe. DAoC isn't dead, but the in-game community has definitely become far less friendly. It's not the game's fault though. To paraphrase Gandhi, "Be the change."

I find it amusing so many people refer to the game by saying DAoC failed because...
DAoC has been looked at by several sites and by many players and said to have 1 of if not the best PvP system of any MMO.
DAoC had what I felt the best and most enjoyable community of any game I have ever been a part of, pre-cluster.
DAoC has become aged and neglected but it in no way has failed.
Completely agree

Yes, nerfing PvE is bad and people left because they were pissed off and did not want ‘mandatory additional’ PvE. Players had already spent many hundreds of hours to get characters ready for the frontiers and most players did not want to be ‘required’ to take those frontier ready toons back to PvE.
Even many players that loved PvE did not want to be required to return to PvE with their PvP ready toons. When a player wants some PvP, they want to log in and PvP they do not want every single one of their frontier ready toons to suddenly be gimped and no longer frontier ready.
Adding PvE as an option for players who love such things, it is a great idea and necessary for the game but that is not what Mythic did.
It is important to add things for players to shoot for. It is a mistake to add things that are so OP, unless a character has those things almost no group will invite. Adding items and abilities gained through PvE that are so OP the OP items/abilities are required to be able to PvP, it totally screws the players who already had frontier ready toons and it screws those who were almost frontier ready and jonesing to get out and RvR. Remember, we are not talking about a few hours of additional PvE to get back to being frontier ready.
Players will spend many hours tweaking a template to get every last little point of advantage. Mythic did not need to add OP/required abilities and items to an xpac.

I have always said that DAoC is the greatest game concept with the worst implementation. Mythic (MJ) failed.

The comments about RvR kinda jump out at me. It sounds like you think players should be able to RvR without any or very little PvE requirements. I just don't think DAOC was ever designed to really allow complete separation of PvE and RvR. What made DAOC great in my opinion is the game was designed from the ground up to encompass both. They work together to advance the player and I really don't think one should be excluded.

Oh, come on. When ToA was introduced people were not reaching ML10 and having level ten artifact temps overnight. There may have been a few that got there a lot faster than most but I never had any problem playing my only two level 50 RvR ready toon for the 6 months it took me to get to ML10 and having 2 or 3 level ten arts on just one of them. Yes there were times when I got killed because someone had an ability I didn't or couldn't counter(this happens all the time now anyway) but it hardly made it impossible to play effectively. Hell even last year when I last played I had no problem playing as a solo RR2/ML0/Cl0 RM with a half assed temp and NO artifacts. Of course it would be a lot harder to compete as a solo melee class but that is now, not then, but it's hardly an issue now getting ToA done.
Yes there were some annoying aspects of ToA, due to bugs mostly, and many of the abilities were originally ridiculous but DAOC is an MMORPG, having a challenge to advance your character, whether through PvE or PvP, is what makes a game fun for me otherwise it's just a MMOG. So saying easy PvE is bad and hard PvE is bad is a no win situation. You'll never be able to make everyone happy no matter how perfect a game is.

LOL . . . Exactly.

Oops, sorry. My mistake. I guess that players being excluded from groups back then if the player did not have TOA done, I guess that was not the norm . . . or was it?
Any that imply TOA was not necessary for RvR are blowing smoke. Yea, yea . . . I went out to the frontiers many times with my level 20 so I guess I could get existential and say level 50 isn't a requirement but that is just as silly.
Unless the group was a bunch of friends taking pity or the group was some friends/guildies helping out, most (95++%) of the good groups would exclude non TOA geared players and even friends/guildies had limits on how long they would let others slide.

Lets be honest here.
People that want to PvE would play on Gaheris.
People that want to RvR would play on Ywain.
Anyone that needs to PvE on Ywain to get items for a template, rather have the PvE content easier and less crap to do.
Anyone that wants to PvE on Ywain to make plat, is wasteing their time because what good is plat if you aren't going to get gear for your character to RvR.
