Why would you want to use 11 year old code that has been poorly maintained? I am sure everyone is aware of the criminally poor design and implementation of this game, see the water that is underneath Agramon Island if you are unaware. I have not played this game in years, I went and got a Masters Degree in Software engineering and actually learned why DAOC is so much more terrible then I already thought it was.

Want to save the game? no you don,t what you want is to save what you like about the game, so make a new game. If you know enough about coding to understand how to develop an open source project then you know enough to write good code instead of the mess that this game has become, don't believe me it's a mess? decompile it once then come talk to me.

Since I work in this industry I have some experience on how these things work, I would be willing to wager that EA is using this game as an entry point for interns that are on the possible hire list, that is what my company does with several of our older games.

Since this game has come out, there has been so many technological advances that are now mainstream, it would not even be remotely realistic to try to retrofit deprecated legacy code with it. Search the US Copyright laws, you can create a game in DAOC's image with your own art and there is not a damn thing EA can do about it, simply change the art and it is considered an original game, think I am full of it? look up how WoW got it's start, that game was designed to be a totally different game in the beginning due to disputes over who got to call the shots on the final design, the plans changed and we got WoW. No copyright claims, no lawsuits because the US patent office does not allow for the patent of video game ideas.

I have seen a lot of arguments in this thread, some of you know what you are talking about, a lot of you are full of it and have no real understanding of what you are trying to articulate, believe me it shows and if you do not have working knowledge in this business it is best to just read posting on a subject you do not understand makes you look silly.

It takes a lot of nails to build a crib, but just one screw to fill it.
Everywhere is walking distance if you have enough time.

Like playing in the Lab ? DAoC server performance is the crappiest of any game I've ever played. I'd compare it's performance to CSR performance.

You obviously didn't play WoW on the Windrunner server at it's inception; makes playing DAoC in the Lab look the epitome of server efficiency.

Not saying DAoC has the best servers, far from it. But worst of any game? No.
