even diablo 2 has 80K players and the games 90 years old
What, are you serious? I'd be very surprised if there was less than 20,000 subs, it's probably closer to 50,000. Also you're comparing a monthly subscription fee game to a free to play one?

average MMO userbase is 10-12 times higher then the peak concurrent user count...
so sense daoc peaks around 3k subscribers at prime time.. it has between 30k-36k active subscriptions.

Subs are fine, leave 'em alone.

I think if it was f2p it might be enough to get me to log in again.
Would solve the buffbot problem as everyone would be able to afford a second account.

And nobody would be able to login because the server would be full from every stealther having 2+ bots.

Servers do cost money
Servers are actually cheap and bandwidth through Verizon is cheap.
Shop around for top of the line blade servers and Verizon hosting you will see it's actually inexpensive in comparison to what they make by 1000Xs.
You really think 4 or 5 k is expensive for servers?
The servers were paid for years ago and maintenance is not what you think it is, it's not like they need oil changes etc.

no they dont need oil changes, they just need minimum of 2 IT guys, more likely 3 of them... to maintain ... thats 3 guys at 50k+ a year, + power+internet access probly cost mythic 200k just to keep the servers up and running... that requires 1200 subscribers alone..
then you have customer service people, devs, and the like... mythic probly has 10-20 other employees outside of management so your looking at needing another 3k subscribers to cover the cost of those employees...
then theres management, and lease on the building they run everything out of...
honestly i think DAoC would have to have at least 10k subs just to break even.

There is no reliable guide to how player numbers relate to subs however.
Way back Bruce Woodcock - when he was actively updating mmorpgchart - posted on VN that DAoC subscribers were more likely to be active and that the multiplier was 3x to 4x.
Which means what?
Well peak numbers on Ywain were 2.5 to 3.5k pre-Rift - but the peak period is only a few hours and DAoC has never been a casual 20 minute experience. A few on Gaheris - a peak of 4-5k is a stretch?
Go with the 3x to 4x multiplier and that gives a 12-20k band.
But if the nultiplier is lower - as a result of the billing fiasco - the numbers could be lower.
Sanya posted awhile back saying DAoC users were 10-12 times the peak conccurent users... and considering she knew exactly how many accounts were active and stuff, being a mythic employee....
i'll stick to at least 10x multiplier... maybe grudgenly be talked into only an 8x multiplier...
wich at 2.5 online 8x is still 20k subs...
