Raids and group leaders
Most can’t lead a raid/group (or they just hate it), that is just the reality of the world. It makes a great sound bite, “just do it yourself†but it is not reality. The number of people who have the ability/psychology/skill/time/etc to run their own raids is fairly small and any game that is designed expecting the number of raid/group leaders to be large, the game would be destine for exactly the population that DAoC now has.
Exceptions to a rule do not change the rule (exceptions like “I can run a raid†or “I know a person that can leadâ€). The reality is, most players do not have what it takes to run a group/raid. Proof, is in the reality of what we see happening. All the great sound bites of the world will not change the reality of humanity.
Again, finding an isolated exception does not change any of the basic rules of human nature.
Lootjackers
Mythic must think it is funny or advantageous to have such things in the game. They know it exists and have done nothing to stop it.
While many have a strange hatred of anything “WoWâ€, this is one of those areas where Blizzard has an understanding of human nature, and Blizzard shows an understanding of reality, that Mythic seems to lack. In WoW if a group leader does not follow the stated loot rules a player can file a complaint. Once a complaint is filed Blizzard will actually pull the text logs to review the stated loot rules of the group and then see if the leader broke the loot rules. If the leader broke the rules and jacked loot, the leader is penalized.
Let me see now. . . .WoW an inferior game with 10 million +++ subs and Blizzard will police the game. . . .DAoC a superior game concept with 20k subs (and decreasing) and Mythic thinks anarchy is fine. The reality of the situation should be self-evident.
No, I am not saying WoW is without problems or that Blizzard is perfect. I am saying that Blizzard has a much better understanding of human nature and Mythic seems to lack understanding of both reality and of human nature. I would never want DAoC to become WoW but there is a lot that developers can/could learn from Blizzard.

The game needs rare/top items that only a few have access to - it's a status symbol and something to aspire to and work towards obtaining.
If you mean a rare/top item that is status only and has no real bump in bonus/stats/abilities/etc. . . that would be fine.
If you mean rare/top item via a boost in bonus/stats/abilities/etc. . . Sorry but that is way off the mark of what the game needs. Your suggestion is the exact opposite of what the game needs.

the problem is there arent enough money sinks taking currency out of the game... so people end up with accounts that have thousands of plat and nothing to do with it...
and sense there are people that can afford the high price... thats the price people set for the items...
if people couldnt afford it... then they wouldnt be priced so damned high...
I agree that one of the problems is the lack of money sinks.
Another contributing factor is the ease at which players can power farm plat. While noobs and many casuals have trouble obtaining plat, any player that can form the correct group and also learns the necessary methods can easily make hundreds of plat.
I would add that Min/Max contributes to the problem as does having no (or limited) alternatives for similar loot. If the stats were not so important and/or if there were similar gear available through crafting or other methods, even with a glut of plat, players would not be able to charge such high prices.
1. Mythic needs more money sinks.
2. Mythic needs to eliminate a great deal of the Min/Max problem.
3. Crafted gear always needs to be comparable to the best drops (not equal to, just similar to).
4. There needs to be multiple methods for obtaining all of the best gear. (and those methods should not necessitate bots or creating PL groups to power farm).
5. The ability to power farm plat needs to be eliminated.
