Alb/ perc.
I didnt rp or see too much of it, at least i didnt think at the time, but it was nice not to see lame names and any sort of spam/ harassment was dealt with, again, not sure how different from regular servers.
I would think RP servers had a more mature crowd vs normal servers.
Too many damn nostalgia threads lately!

Midgard Percival here. I miss the RP servers immensely. I am enjoying todays game still, having recently returned, but I do get tired of all the childish and ignorant names I see every day. I am sure there owners find them funny (or chose them to deliberately state they never would consider roleplay I dunno), but I loved all the more or less in character names for both characters and guilds on the RP servers.
The fact the game had RP servers marked it as a notch above the competition at the time. Of course today, RP is more or less lost as a concept.
All that said I actually didn't roleplay all that much in this game - not by comparison to say Starwars Galaxies which was a worse game by far but much more immersive - but I did enjoy the other players. I think by its very nature, an RP server tends to acquire more mature players. Not always mind you, but on average.
I played Hibs on Guin and Albs on Nimue but never very much and none got over level 24 or so I think.
Midgard Percival was THE realm to play in I think for the old game. It was one of the most successful Midgards on all the servers, and Percival had some dedicated players on all sides.
Oh and I have to say Sanger's guide is priceless. He was a great player - and played on Mid/Perc

I started on Hib/Guin in the summer of 2003. By that time RP was already out the window. And clustering which followed a couple years later only made it worse.

Well the servers (Percival, Guinevere, Nimue (I think)) were supposed to be dedicated to those people who wanted to play in character, and since there were plenty of other servers to choose from, that shouldn't have been a problem. Mostly it wasn't.
It had a slightly different set of rules that applied to the RP servers only. You could be appealed for names which violated those rules (i.e. most of the names you see online these days), you could be appealed for out of character type speech in public (/say), and it was discouraged in most places outside of guild chat etc. It made for more atmosphere and a lot more conversations in /say rather than in /as or /region etc. It often meant more polite people.
Non-RP people seem to think roleplayers were kind of snooty mind you, so there was always an element of players who took offense to the mere existence of roleplayers, so there would regularly be people who would create a new character on an RP server, usually with an offensive name (enough it might get appealed even today in other words) who would then spam /region /say or whatever with continuous insults about how we all sucked and should be killed etc. Massive hatred which required them to spend their time yelling at us. Usually before they could be appealed, they would log, delete, then make another character and repeat the process. I dunno why, since I have never seen an RP player go to the regular servers and do a similar thing.
The other common misconception was that if you were a roleplayer you couldn't possibly be good at RvR/PvP. This in spite of the fact that some of the best overall players of this game came from servers like Percival and Guinevere

I started out on Mid Perc shortly after startup, and my first character was a skald named Cleave who started out with axes. I had to change my name when someone appealed my shaman Kryptic when I wouldn't let him join my group out by Gna faste one day. When they reviewed that appeal, Cleave was caught up too, and my appeals were to no avail, and Kelryck was born.
I joined a small guild run by Smilla called Kampvilja, and later we merged into vengeance of Valhalla.
Fun days.. I remember late nights doing wall defense, and I found groups once I made it into my 30's, just from people who needed speed or healing.
I remember how excited I was to be on a relic raid at level 36 as a healer and actually be able to rez a level 50! It took all my power, but what a rush it was to free up a bigger healer to do something else.
I also played Hib Nimue and Alb Guin, and had bards and minstrels named kelryck as well.
Fun days... coming up with the role play boards, and I even had the DAOC radio show that went on for about 6 months on a webradio station. ahhhh memories!
