I'm leaning toward it was someone you know. Having had my stuff stolen awhile back I know it sucks but the chances you got a keylogger and it was from someone that gives 2 craps about DaoC is pretty low imo (just looking at the current daoc population). In my case it was someone I knew in game for a long time.

One of my pc's at home has windows xp service pack 1 and hasn't had a windows security update applied to it in the last 9 years. I'm not really interested in doing the research but in my experience every virus I've ever gotten on a pc has been from me downloading and installing something that was questionable. That's not to say you can't get things from websites as Semi4 described but in my experience that has not been the case. I will say that I do not use IE or Outlook.

i think its unlikely a keylogger was after a DAOC account people.

I mean wtf. If you have a keylogger virus they're going to look for your credit card info and banking information. Why the hell would they see that he plays some random game called dark age of camelot, and then go and download and install it onto their computer so they can login?

its probably someone you gave your account information to.

I mostly agree. I do not think the DAoC account was the original/expected target.

However, WoW and many other games are targets of hackers who use keyloggers (many WoW keyloggers originate in China) and there are still China farmers in DAoC. WoW/Blizzard is always struggling with Keyloggers stealing WoW accounts and then some China IP address emptying the stolen account of gold/gear.

It is not inconceivable for some China hacker who is running farmers in many different games (like WoW, DAoC, etc. . .) to also be using keylogger attacks to get more gear/gold to sell from WoW. If a hacker happens to gain access to DAoC account info, if they have farmers in DAoC, they would probably know Mythic’s policy of not doing anything should a hacker ravage a DAoC account.

If it was a keylogger I do not believe the DAoC account was the intended target but game accounts of the larger games are a target of China farmers/hackers. A China farmer getting the account info to a DAoC account would just be a crime of opportunity for a farmer who was already farming and selling DAoC plat/gear.

yes certainly WoW is much more likely. Actually I think the only way someone could ever DAOC stuff stolen by a keylogger is if someone was specifically targetting them, like gold sellers for example. If you buy gold for real money off of those guys, I'm sure some of them could easily put keylogger viruses on their site, so they sell you 500 plat and then collect people's account information to steal back the loot when their business isn't doing so well. Probably they wouldn't steal it back immediately because people would stop buying from them, but i'm sure some of them would log into your account years later since its unlikely that the info would have changed. And p.s., if you got your stuff stolen in this manner, because you bought gold off of one of these sites, then sorry but I feel no remorse for you.

That is a good point. Gold sellers and their web sites are a good place to get hit with a keylogger.

If you use the same login for forum accounts and such it's entirely possible they got it that way.

No, I use different logins for my accounts, and have not given anybody my info to that account... I let somebody use my bot account, but that has entirely different login/password. My bot account wasn't even touched so i don't see what happened if not a Keylogger??

did you ever buy gold or anything for RL money from one of those sites? Again the only way you're gonna get a keylogger is from some type of DAOC specific site. People aren't gonna look for your credit card information and then find a DAOC password and decide to do something with it.

You don't even need to have purchased gold, just going to one of those sites to check things out (curiosity) can get you hit with a keylogger that moves to your computer as an advertisement plays.

How the hell could it be a keylogger when you don't even type your account name?

Sure they'll have your password, but what good would that do w/o an account name?

Sounds to me like the OP has some shitty friends.
