The problem I have with GW2 is this...
It's not RvRvR or WvWvW or whatever they want to call it.
Take a look at daoc. We have AvMvH.
What will GW2 have?
Same side v same side v same side. Where are you going to build the hatred? I HATE THOSE GUYS THEY ARE THE SAME RACES AND CLASSES AS USSSS!!!!
That is an interesting point that I know concerns some people but I don't get it myself. I never hated on the other sides because they were different from mine.
There are different degrees of “HATEâ€. While some players did/do actually hate the other realms, and allowing players to go in that direction can be good for bringing a realm together, I would view the term “I HATE THOSE GUYS. ..†more along the lines of ‘Realm Pride’.
In DAoC the other realms are ‘obviously’ the enemy. It is not so much that I actually HATE them, but simply that they are clearly and obviously the enemy. Many have forgotten and some never had any understanding or never had any Realm Pride but early on in DAoC ‘Realm Pride’ was important in giving the game the ambiance that attracted players to it.
The server wars, that the GW2 has, seem to give some ambiguity to the separatist feel that lends itself to fostering Realm Pride.
I am not so sure that the timed events that sound like ‘capture the flag before the timer ends’ where you are fighting against your own kind, will create the atmosphere that is necessary for the game to flourish.
I like the open and never ending battles of DAoC's BGs and NF. The timed events of WoW can have their place but I like the continual battle in the Frontiers and BGs.
It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. If the game has good, cohesive and comprehensive PvE, it will probably do well. If the game has a reason for the PvE players to head out to the battle grounds or to the Mist (a better draw than just something like RPs or a title) then the game will probably do well. If not, then probably not so well.
