One of my favorite keep defense memories was at Benowyc. I do not remember which Thane it was, but I believe it was an old HoG (Hunters of Glory) turned UC Thane. He was spamming hammers down on the Albs and I thought, "hey, maybe thanes are cool." (I hated when Midgard was Thanegard. Thanes were annoying to me.)

Now I love Thanes.

You could never get away with accidently pulling stuff as a thane, those hammers were a dead give away.

I have two semi-Thane stories. Nothing historic or anything just flashes in my memory.

There was this one really good Thane I leveled up with in the low levels. He met Neyne and subsequently passed me big time. His name was Tibrr (sp?). He, and others, helped Neyne make Broderskapet. Anyway. I'm leveling with people at the ghosts in Ygg (old school leveling spot). Some albs wipe us and out of nowhere comes Ele, Neyne, and Tibrr. They just wiped people instantly. Thanes were insane before the buff and damage add nerfs.

Another is just a general Emain story where Smeagol or someone was leading the zerg in Emain and we were all sitting at the thimble waiting on the Hibs and Albs to fight. Someone called charge and we rush down. Qazar and other healers get off perfect mezzes. Bam! AE hammers go flying. I die and I sit there watching the hammers. That started the whole CG battles where Qazar and a few others bitched out the Thanes constantly from then on. I quite enjoyed all those blue hammers crashing down. I'm glad they are back.

Interesting thread. Although i quit playing daoc before alot of the memeries people posted here i do remember some of the real old school stuff. Who knows who even remembers me from ages ago but i was in Skona Raiders as a troll skald. Was the original TL for spiritmasters and cabalists in daoc beta as Lodor/Diese.

Some things i could add:

Leveling on jotuns since it was the only place to hit 50 besides mass killing in spind back in the day.

Grouping with smeagol and always running or wiping when he said he would be the puller from his massive baf trains.

Being at the first midgard dragon kill gamewide lead by SR's own smeagol and a healer i cant seem to remember their name atm.

Back in the jotun days i remember training one all the way to gna fauste (been a long time so i might have the area wrong) guard tower and watch low lvls get run over by it for over a hour. Remember it killing Natsumo a few times (no old SR here to understand that part but if some show up sameday andread this).

Getting into many arguements with that spiritmaster from Impact ingame and on these forums.

Always dealing with Lexi via tells when people in the SR allience got pissed at piracy.

Listening to a few people in SR (wont name names) always flirting with Phedra via chat, irc, etc.

When the only RvR was Skona Raiders vs. Blackthornes because out of the 3 realms we were the only lvl 50s more or less.

Of the first 20 mids to hit 50 18 were SR and people resented us for it (other 2 to hit 50 were melal and neyne if my memery is right).

All the old relic raids lead my smeagol where he would go ape.... on people for messing up something.

Giving nightrain shit for always spamming area hammers.

All the asian alb zergs and their keke

Running around emain with Akeel on our skalds at very odd hours.

Powerleveling alts with Thor while he used Grands shaman as a bot.

Ill have to dig out my old pc that has tons of SS from back in those days sometime.

Lodor always calmed me down so I went right to Lodor for help when something went awry hehe.

Thane stories? Who can forget the I don't believe in mez thane in Waelwulfas? What was the name.. Johan? Dammit the name is eluding me... but he was a forefront on why people hated Thanes... everytime he came out ae ae ae ae it was hilarious.

Waelwulfas - vs- SR and trying to remain neutral even tho I was in WW.

Trying to get Nightrain to stop flirting with me 24-7 while trying to remain his friend.

Katja helping me get exp in the frontiers for a good few hours

Duoing with that old SR hunter... ugh what was his name? not smeagol not shoo but ugh... dammit

I still will never forget starting the stealth keep take zerg non stop then within a few days the emergency keep door change.

Having people kiss my ass royally while I had ss's sent to me of them telling other people how much they hated me.

I won't lie... creating the best drama midgard has ever seen.

Epic armor quotes such as 'this is the last suit I will ever need'

Or

I will never level another 50 again.

Star Dust... one of my guilds oldest allies and oldest friends... Since Piracy and them normally played at the same times because we were a bunch of insomniac stupid Americans we had great times and they taught me many many naughty cantonese phrases.

Old Original SR whom I kinda liked mostly till they revamped themselves.

When raum was an empty zone and you could just roam in nothingness.

<lothar> you mean the first dragon kill that we all did super fast then found out the dragon was bugged and 'too easy' then we went months without being able to kill it again? I remember that then.

The first massive alliance of Midgard where everyone hated everyone but tried so hard to get together.

I didn't "HATE" many people in game, but I won't lie, I started off just hating Star Dust. They would constantly hit your mobs in spind with AE and then you would have to log out or deal with the ADDs. They would never rez people, yet they would also try and ask for rezzes, even if they were in tne most impossible places. As the guild thinned out, a lot of the good Star Dust people remained and I grew to know some of them as individuals instead of grouping them all together as aholes. There were indeed some very nice people in SD that were fun to group with, and of course, some aholes.

The Skona hunter was litle or littl I believe.

Smeagol's raids were always interesting, and he normally ran a damn good raid.

There definitely was a bit of dislike around the realm regarding Skona. I remember starting out and people "warning" me about them left and right. Daoc was my first MMO so I guess I never understood the whole they hit 50 first, exclude others thing since I was still convinced even though it was an MMO I didn't need a guild or groups (I soloed and stayed guildless for my first character, a Thane I abandoned around 18 and my first 20 or so Levels of Blough). I had to be convinced for days by a real life friend to join a guild at all, and I never expected to stick with the game till 50, let alone multiple 50s. So I really had no understanding of why people would be "mad" at them but I guess the perception was they left the whole realm behind while they went around doing whatever they wanted? Just like any other guild, I always found people in Skona I could care less about, and people I really liked.

I don't remember WWs much, but I do remember that one Runemaster (maybe SM) dude who stayed in it way after it broke up and was completely out there. This dude would instist he could solo keeps and always talked about how he wanted to kill himself.

And Lexi was the drama in Mid. Between Garek on the message boards and da Lexi, Gawaine was never bored. Short of people yes, but not boring.

Calroth.

I think I was the only person who could handle him but yes he was highly suicidal.

The other suicidal person was not ww and i forgot his name.... he somehow got an invite into Skona Raiders and even they didn't know who it was.

NELINTHAR thats it...

There was another suicidal guy but was a thane i think in Broderskapet... I loved him to death but he would email me suicide notes and talk about it non stop. Naturally I beefed him on and he just vanished... I hope to god I didn't kill him lol

Wow just by the above mentioned I never knew so many depressed people played DAoC.

TBH I only hated a few people in this game... Zigweiner I hated but I think we got on ok levels. I always hated Distant but hell he's a nobody. Forn Sidr people even tho a handful were great and always told me stuff. Hand of Valor originals tho most are now gone. Aesir... couldn't stand em at all but then the people I hated are gone to. At this point in time I can't think of anyone I really dispise... even Seclusion became watered down and the people I hate nearly vanished to the point where the people on it now I don't even care about. Wow.. a hate free Lexi? amazing.

I miss the old days... with old frontiers came old fun drama. Now there is too much unity among people
