"editing the message = alot more work."

A Regex replace would do it easily.

lol I laugh at all the parents talking about not wanting thier kids to see profanity. How can you be so ignorant that we're basically taught to do it by kids at school, that there is no way to stop us children from knowing it.

I have never read a more ignorant statement. Parents dont want there kids to read profanity. Good parents dont want to give their children the impression that it is ok to swear or cuss. I never allow cussing around my little ones. My 7year old is exceptionally intelligent and loves to play WoW and AC. A good foul language blocker would be a major help. And some mature adults prefer not to have to read F### this or that ever other line. The only people that have to cuss or swear do so because they lack a proper grasp of the english vocabulary.

Ya, it's not just the kiddies. I'm 50, and while I've "heard it all" that doesn't mean I don't mind it. I'd prefer to go through a gaming situation without it. I'd just as soon not have those words running through my mind. Especially when for the most part they are unecessary. You might say I could turn off general chat, but the speaker bears the responsibility to others here. And yes, if you're too vulgar in my book, you get squelched.

What a joke -- swearing by no means implies a lack of vocabulary or erudition.

If you don't want your children using profanity, make your viewpoints on it clear to them by speaking to them about it. No other way will work. You cannot halt their exposure to "vulgarity," no matter how much you'd like to.

I'm not saying a profanity filter is a bad idea. It's just a misguided idea for a twelve-year old.

You say, "FOR THE VITAE!"
Ru tells you, "CHAZ!"
Simply Red tells you, "I am SO not recovering your body!"

Some people choose not to expose themselves to this type of language, whether for themselves or their children.

I have an 11 year old daughter I've restriced from playing due in part to language issues. Of course she knows all the "bad" words and probably uses them as well. However, she doesn't use them around me, nor will I encourage her to do so at any age.

Millions of seven year olds play Nintendo and other video games, so it shouldn't be surprising to find some in AC.

I'm not one to tell parents how to raise their kids, but I will offer up my opinion on it.

If a parent doesn't want their children to be exposed to that type of language, they need to reduce the activities that would expose their children to it.

Not playing AC is one of the first things I would do as a parent if I felt that it was harmful to my children. I don't care how much they like it and want to play. If I feel that it is a negative influence on my child, and I don't want my child exposed to that, then I would simply remove the problem (which is the software).

Nintendo is different because for starters they have pretty strict guidelines on what they can and cannot produce/sell. Some things can still be too much for children to handle, and those games are given a Teen or Mature rating. The rating system is designed for stores and for parents to help guide them to games that are suitable for children.

Once again, if you do not want your child exposed to those kinds of things, then you need to purchase software that isn't rated at a Teen or Mature rating. Granted Turbine could do more to limit vulgarity, but it would infringe on other people's rights to express themselves (even if their expression is unwanted by others). Regardless of how you personally feel about vulgarity, how right is it to inhibit someone's right to express that?

To some degree I can see it needed and I can agree that I personally dislike vulgarity, while the ethical side of me wonders when censorship goes over the top. People can't expect "the machine" (government, corporation, etc) to be the ruler on censorship because as soon as you allow them to start censoring one thing, who knows what they'll censor next.

While a plugin can fill this need for many people, I'd just assume remove the problem altogether from my child's life. Not to meantion, there are more problems to AC for chilren than just vulgarity. *shrug*

Asheron's Call is a game created, owned and operated by Turbine. They have every right to impose any limits they see fit in order to create the community they want for their game.

That being said, I'd say that the ideal solution is not a plugin. The ideal solution is to play with your child and set limits. Put them in a friendly monarchy which does not allow vulgarity. Mute the global chat channels. Teach them to try to do something themself, and if they can't, ask people in the monarchy.

Since I don't play HG I don't know what the monarchies are, but I'm sure there's one that fits that description.

just because they CAN do it, it doesn't necessarily make it "right" to do so.

doesn't someone have just as much right to express themselves as someone else?

It's a tricky issue and is a very hot topic for pretty much any ethical class or debate.

There is no right or wrong answer.. especially when determining where one person's rights stop, and another persons's start.

do you have the right to not listen to the vulgarity? If I swear, does it infringe upon your right to not listen to it?

*shrug*

"right" and "legal" aren't always the same thing. Just because something CAN be done, does not make it right.
