I had a similar issue. AC was completely raping my GPU, to the point of capacitor whine.
AC character select screen likes to render 3000+ FPS which causes cap. whine from my 460. I do believe it's contributed to the degradation of my card.

Sounds like you trade one problem for another. My 5770 card seems to handle everything fine.

interesting, I just renewed AC and noticed a whining sound coming from my card while on the char select screen. I'm running a Radeon 6970, so it's definitely not just an nvidia issue. this is making me a little scared to continue playing, I don't want to risk my $350 video card  . |

Sounds like you trade one problem for another. My 5770 card seems to handle everything fine.
I would take a drop in performance over deterioration of my hardware. Regardless, notice the usage of the word 'might' -- in my case, I noticed no loss of performance and I am an avid PKer.

Sometimes when I alt+tab and return to AC my character's armor will be in black and white, sort of like the terrain issue that is fixed by turning off that landscape option.

or you can take off any piece of armor and put it back on and it fixes all your armor

You can also open the option menu and click "show your helm or head gear". Don't even have to apply just quickly toggle it.

I just turned on VSync. I still get serious windup at CharCreation though, but I don't notice any motion blur, so that's good.
