ugh I loathe instant oatmeal.
If I'm going to have oatmeal, I prefer steel cut oats, cooked with dried cranberries (instead of raisins). Or, if I want apple cinnamon oatmeal, I keep actual dried apples on hand for that.
I can understand eating it in a pinch if you absolutely must, but by choice?

I like maple and brown sugar.
Microwave the water for 1 min, pour over the oatmeal and throw in a little honey. Mmm..

I pour boiling water on mine the rare occasions that I have it.
I agree that nuking it all together makes the oats more slimy.

I actually don't like regular oatmeal at all, the oats get all mushy and gross and slimy, almost as bad as nuking the two together.

hot water form the machine w/ a 15 sec burst in the microwave to make it hotter. then add sugar, half and half. nice and creamy and HOT. no slime factor.

It's not the greatest texture but generally if I'm eating it I'm in a hurry anyway, so it beats a cold bagel or poptart.
you could nuke the water and then add the oatmeal, that's how I did it as a kid. I have an electric cordless kettle now, and I freaking love it.
