a couple of beers is different than getting hammered every night
I don't know about that! If you feel like you NEED a beer every night, I think that leans a bit towards alcoholism. A buzz every night? Yeah, definitely!
Needing a beer every night is called a Maintenance Alcoholic, they might never, or rarely get blitzed drunk, but they need daily intake of alcohol.
And most of them will never admit that this kind of drinking affects their lifestyle, or those around them.
I think it does affect their lifestyle AND those around them, but that's my 2 cents. What can you do when you're drunk? Just sit around the house or hope someone picks up your drunk ass.
it isn't that the drinking itself affects their life, its that the being an alcoholic affects their life, their choices, etc. things you learn when you go to AA meetings, drinking is a byproduct of a disease with many facets. Simply getting sober doesn't put someone on the road to recovery, it's like trying to cure cancer by giving someone morphine for the pain.
Edit: Not everyone who drinks everyday is an alcoholic... but someone who NEEDS to drink everyday IS.

Pretty much everything in my life is a byproduct of being bored.
Working out, drinking. Sometimes I get so bored I actually work.

I always thought of it as the opposite. Interesting to say the least

I suppose some would say "welcome to real life". Next step is a boredom reducing child.

I wrote my answer from the bar while eating chicken wings (special night) with a few co-workers.
It's either good trolling or naivety.

In Wisconsin, it's part of the culture to have a drink every day.

Mangler had an accident on the way home from the liquor store. He was run off the road and crashed into a woman's clinic. It was one giant Pabst smear.

I NEED my coffee everyday.

Ideology is not reality.
To make good policy, one must consider all ideologies and decide which best solves the reality of the situation. Ideology is afterall, JUST AN IDEA.

I'm a drunk. I've been drunk 5 times in the past 2 years. I go months at a time without a drink, but I'm still a drunk. I don't worry about it anymore. If I had to drink everyday (which was never my situation), I would worry about it. Same as I had to stop getting shite faced 7 or 8 times a month like I was doing from 2005 - 2009.
Having a drink (or a couple) most days isn't a problem unless you think it is one. Drunks might lie to everyone else....but they know if they have a problem.
Social drinking isn't evil. It isn't a step away from being an alcoholic. It's simply an enjoyable break from the day for the vast majority of people who do it. The attitude on social drinking varies widely depending upon where you live. In most of the NE and upper Midwest....it's nothing. No more worthy of noticing than someone having a cup of coffee. In the south, it's an evil, horrible thing that means you are a drunk and probably beat your wife and kids. Probably why there are so many more asshat drunks in the south than everywhere else. If you think something is evil and makes you a horrible person....you probably will act like a horrible person when you do it.
