my best friend and I used to rockhound, but not a lot of stuff to find easily in the PNW, we found jade a few times, but we did find lots of leaf fossils in the shale, and a couple geodes with quartz inside.
We mostly look for Lake Superior Agate, but we've also found datolite, thomsonite, unakite, petoskey stones, halysite, granite, sandstone, and a lot of different-colored quartz. Not to mention all the rocks I can't recall.

I find agate pretty often at the beach, and I brought a bunch of petrified wood back from SE Alaska. Rock collecting has been a family hobby for many years, my grandmother and aunt both collected rocks from the beach and I inherited those, and I'll be passing them on to my son who started collecting driveway rocks when he was 3 or 4.

My collecting started when I was little, too. My grandmother always brought a rock back from wherever she went. I bring back 100s! 
I collect sea shells, too, but I'm on the wrong side of the state to find the really nice ones. I've had better luck with fossilized shark's teeth - lemon, bull, dusky, mako, megaladon, tiger and snaggletooth (that I can recall).

i can't imagine just happening upon a megaladon tooth. i know they're pretty common due to how easily and cheaply one can purchase them. but just looking down and going oh look a huge goddamn shark tooth!
