I beg to differ. It's all about how you define comfortable. Some people will never be "comfortable" nor content regardless of their net income.
As for the .5, I have a child from a previous marriage that isn't "mine" legally or genetically but I still consider him my son. We get the fortune of having him on many weekends and over some vacations.

I am considered working poor by American standards. I also know that there are places in the world where there is no food, so people eat corpses. I feel pretty lucky, overall.

If you look at what the middle class had, as an example, when my parents were growing up vice now....they didnt have multiple TVs, cell phones, cars, blah blah blah.
Peoples standards and expectations get higher and higher and are essentially never satified

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The United States holds a disproportionate amount of the world's rich people.
It only takes $34,000 a year, after taxes, to be among the richest 1% in the world. That's for each person living under the same roof, including children. (So a family of four, for example, needs to make $136,000.)
So where do these lucky rich people live? About half of them -- 29 million -- live in the United States, according to calculations by World Bank economist Branko Milanovic in his book The Haves and the Have-Nots.
Another four million live in Germany. The rest are mainly scattered throughout Europe, Latin America and a few Asian countries. Statistically speaking, none live in Africa, China or India despite those being some of the most populous areas of the world.
