I don't think she's entitled to any "compensation" but I do think that if the family had personal liability insurance, she should be entitled to have her medical expenses covered.

Is the parent's suffering worth more than her suffering? I don't think people would be singing the same tune if the deceased was a 50 year old alcoholic with no family or kids and an estate worth 500k.
The kid's actions directly harmed her person causing bodily harm. I hope she wins in court against his estate, which is probably worth something because she's probably suing with a lawyer on contingency. BUT they should rot in hell if they plan to sue the parent's or train company as well.
