Popular culture is a result primarily not a cause. It has been shaped by hyper self righteous assholes trying to control others through legislation. Don't blame popular culture blame the moral majority, Pat Robertson, Jerry Fallwell, an anti_gay church protecting anal rapers of young boys, and people who cry every time there is a joke about their religion.
If Christians want to improve their image they might begin by acting like followers of Christ. The rest may just fall into place.
Religion reflects culture, not the other way around. "Religious extremism" grows because there is a cultural market for it, to use as justification for their views. The corollary is that people aren't going to change their culture ("acting like followers of Christ"

as a result of their religion.
If someone is using religion as justification for cultural behavior you wish to change, then you need to convince him through culture, not religion, to change his ways. His religion will compensate without your help.
