A lack of a criminal conviction is evidence of insufficient proof not evidence of innocence.
A civil settlement has nothing to do with criminal charges. They are separate processes.
Our justice system is not perfect. Court is an expensive, time-consuming, and emotionally traumatic experience. People don't always get justice. Sometimes they have to settle for the closest thing they can get and sometimes a civil settlement is the best thing being offered...
I'm sorry such basic concepts are beyond the comprehension of so many of you with outspoken opinions. Please don't let that stop your ignorant arm-chair legal rulings and proselytism.

If she was raped by somebody who made $25k a year would it still have been worth $400k in court?
Damages are damages. You aren't magically liable for more damages because you make more money. Guys who make $25k don't go to civil court because they don't have $400k to pay those damages. Who is going to go through months of court battle for an IOU from a broke rapist? Is that justice to you? Letting your kid sit on the stand reliving the most traumatic moments in their life to a bunch of strangers so you can spend the rest of your life in a financial contract with their rapist?
And I'm sure the lawyers are lining up to take that case. Who doesn't want to work long hours for no money and no justice?

If it was someone I truly cared about, I'd want the criminal put in jail. I wouldn't be bought off for any amount of money. That's the whole point.
Civil settlements have nothing to do with criminal charges. But I'm sure criminals will learn a harsh lesson when you lack sufficient evidence to press criminal charges and refuse to take them to civil court. I know I learn my lesson when I get off completely free...
