He's rich, white and a celebrity; even if he's was found guilty in a criminal court he'd get what? A few weeks probation? What's the point?

It ends up in both to address different charges and accusations. Civil court has a lower burden of proof. There was not enough evidence to convict him of committing a crime but there was enough to show damages...
He should have sued her.
He wasn't convicted of rape, meaning that in the eyes of the law he is innocent, but his public image is forever damaged.
It is a lot easier to prove someone liable for a crime than it is to convict them of it. That is how OJ got taken to the cleaners as well.

No, in the eyes of the law his guilt has not been proven beyond a reasonable doubt. That is far different from being innocent. Our legal system is designed to prove guilt, not prove innocence.
If his public image was so damaged he could have taken it to court. He and his lawyer opted to settle. Doesn't sound like they're too concerned about his image...
