I thought that if you're spending less than $500 on a speaker system for your PC the cheapo sound cards do no better than the top dollar ones.

Why not> I don't do 7.1 or ever 5.1. I don't like sound processing. Why pay for what I will not use? Anyway, it's neither the speakers or the sound card and frankly I don't know why it is.

settle for a good sound card, amp, and invest in an amazing set of sennheisers/grados
guaranteed to beat any speaker setup

Not true. You will never get sound staging from headphones. All you can get is quality sound with no interference from the outside. Spatial imaging is gone.
