Aberdeen paying $100,000 to bullied student
SEATTLE —
The Aberdeen School District has agreed to pay $135,000 to settle a lawsuit by a former student who was badly bullied.
Russell Dickerson III is now 20 years old. Classmates smashed an egg on his head, taunted him over his race and perceived sexual orientation, and set up a malicious MySpace page in his name.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Washington represented Dickerson in the case, and says school officials must be held responsible when they fail to protect children from bullying. Dickerson and his parents reported the harassment many times, but it continued.
One student eventually pleaded guilty to a harassment charge for writing a racial slur on the MySpace page.
Dickerson gets $100,000 in the settlement, while the ACLU of Washington will receive $35,000 for legal fees.

You should have had a friend like me. When I was 5 I got the boxing gloves strapped on my hands. My dad used to be a pro boxer and believed in fighting growing up and encouraged us to fight. only thing, we weren't supposed to start the fights, just never ever back down. Because of this I developed the habit of picking on the bullies when they would start in on some poor kid. And I never ever got my ass beat by a bully.

the sad thing is, the schools are caught in the middle of all this. They cant protect the student cause most times they have to see the bullying take place to do anything about it. They cant come down hard on the people who are bullying on just the word of the person who was bullied because their parents will be up in arms that their child is being harassed and singled out as well. Its a no win situation. Granted in some situations where there is gross negligence then sure the school should be sued but I dont think thats the majority of the cases.

Has anyone ever seen the Swedish movie Evil? It's a good movie all about a 1950's private boarding school where bullying was institutionalized.
I wonder how institutionalized bullying is in the America school tradition, and how new and alien of a concept is it exactly to discourage bullying on such a mass scale?
