Saving paper and consideration. With how many people just crumple it up or leave it on the counter, it's a nice way of asking if they should waste your time with it.

For those of us that have to do expense reports it makes sense. Typically for crap purchases I dont want one, however if I am even paying for a coffee with my corporate card I need to have a receipt so I can expense it.

they are required by law to have receipts....and some locales make it mandatory to give or offer a receipt as proof of purchase contract
sometimes it's just store policy to prevent fraud and abuse
