what kind of retarded parents would feed their kids junk food 24/7?

Just your average American parents

Except this is a UK family.

It made me /facepalm to read that her mother "couldn't get her to eat anything else". But she's been "addicted" to nuggets since she was two.

GUESS WHAT. YOU REFUSE THEM NUGGETS AND EVENTUALLY THEY GET HUNGRY ENOUGH TO EAT OTHER THINGS. I mean FFS it's not like the two year old could toddle by herself down to the local Mickey D's and just pay for her own nuggets, and then keep doing it for over a decade while her mother helplessly couldn't get her to eat anything else.

And if she truly won't anything else, that's when you call the damn doctor and explain the effing situation and get some medical help for your toddler who won't eat!!!!

/raaaaaage

You seem to think you know a lot about a child that likely has a neurological disorder that has caused this mess. Obviously her parents should have been seeking help for her, but don't blame them for giving her the one thing she WILL eat, and believe me, kids WILL starve themselves to death, if they have texture issues.

Yes, a NORMAL child grows out of this, but not all children are normal, and that is where figuring out what else could be going on needs to come into play. Yes her parents failed her, but not in the sense you think they did.

My parents had the "at least try one bite" rule, too. I was still a horribly picky kid. But, mom wouldn't make me anything else, I had to do it for myself. So I ate a lot of fluffernutter sandwiches when I was little... As I got older, I did widen my tastes, though. I still enjoy a good fluffernutter once in a while, but it's not the only thing I eat.

Also I tend to doubt the bit about trying to starve her into eating other foods. People who are hungry enough will eat things that they previously wouldn't touch, and how long did she keep it up? Two days? Three? More?

I dunno. How long would it take before you ate dog barf? Probably long enough to get your parents arrested for child abuse. I'm certainly not going to starve my kid for multiple days. I know you can make the argument that it's better for her in the long run, but it doesn't work that way... one day would be enough for me to give in.

The mother never consulted a doctor, just "gave up" when nothing she tried worked. Never had her see a shrink, etc. (you'd think she would have mentioned this kind of stuff in the article).

"Stacey’s mother, Evonne, is exasperated by her daughter’s refusal to eat a healthy and varied diet and wants her to see a specialist." Uhhhh...she never took her to a specialist before? In fifteen years? wtf.

Don't get me wrong.. I'm not nominating her for "mum of the year" award. I can forgive a parent with a stubborn child, but not one who lets a problem like this persist without seeking help, especially in the socialized medicine system in Britain. I just don't think starvation is a realistic tactic. Even if it had a chance of working, you ARE bluffing (at least I would be; maybe you are a monster, I dunno) and once she calls your bluff, then you aren't going to win any more arguments for the rest of your life. It's too much of a risk.

It's always pretty damn easy to spot the non-parents on the thread. Mom tried that... the girl decided she'd rather starve.

A poor troll, even for you.

Probably because I wasn't trolling. You'd be amazed how much of what I post is dead f**king serious.

My kid isn't this extreme, just the normal 11-year-old girl whom I have to fight to eat her vegetables, but I'm certainly not going to starve her out. I've learned what works and what doesn't to motivate her, and starving her wouldn't phase her in the least. I also have vivid memories of a specific incident as a child where I dearly wanted to eat my dinner, but I couldn't hold it down, and was forced to sit there all night.

I've lost an insane amount of weight, but I'm still a big guy, and I want my daughter to have a healthy and normal relationship with food. Therefore, I don't do that sort of thing to her.

It's a good thing that everyone is exactly like you.

It's not like I have never heard of this before. One of my cousins has the same thing, only one degree less severe than this girl (if they do in fact have the same thing). Trying new foods or being forced to eat something she didn't want or didn't like would literally cause a mental reaction so severe in her as a child that her throat would close up. The difference is that my aunt didn't just capitulate, or give up. My cousin probably would have starved if the options had been that or eating something not of her choosing. So yeah- I will admit the whole starvation thing was wrong of me.

The difference again, is that my aunt knew that this was not right and got freaking help. My cousin is an adult now with small children of her own, and while her diet is nowhere near as varied as even a normal pizza-downing college student or even a grade-schooler, she is healthy and not malnourished. Her kids also do not seem to have the same issues she did/does with food.
