in my experience, snarfing food is an issue with multiple dogs in the household, or sometimes just multiple pets. They seem to be afraid if they don't eat it as fast as possible that the other animals will eat it.

We just have food dispensers at our house, the cats do just fine with it, the dog overeats a bit but not seriously so.

This is especially a problem if you miss a feeding time. They tend to think they have to eat now and as fast and as much as possible.

Before I moved out, I was feeding my pup about 8 small portions a day during his scarfing phase. Eventually he learned that he will always have food available to him so I can fill up his bowl and he doesn't over eat anymore or eat too fast. He'll actually leave food in the bowl and continues to eat 8-10 times a day on his own.

This has been my experience as well. My dad has 2 minis and when they were fed, they acted like it was a competitive eating contest. The winner would run to the other's bowl and they would get into a fight, lol.

Many of the above answers concerning smaller portions is what I'd do. Hard to inhale your food if it comes only a few bites at a time.

Btw, when I think of Hans, I think of "Ach! Hans run! It's the Llhurgoyf!"

create a reserve system where Hans has to step on a lever that releases 5 or 10 bits of food at a time.

the lady who bought hans as a puppy and raised him for 3 years before she died fed him as if he were her human child. i don't know if schnauzers have a tendency to be food obsessed or not but this one is. he was an only dog and he was so over fed that he was 37 pounds when we adopted him. he was obese as fk. he got diabetes and pancreatic disease from the diet she fed him. he's now a healthy weight, gets a ton of food and treats every day and wants for nothing. but he would literally eat until he threw up and eat some more.

How about freezing the food throughout a block of ice so he can only get at it as the ice melts?

http://www.amazon.com/Ergo-8-Day-Auto-Pet-Feeder/dp/B0008173UQ

You could get something like this, just set it to open 8 times per day and put small amounts in each slot.
