One of my dogs does the "snarfing the food down as fast as possible," tricks too. We have found no real way to stop him. He would just take any ball, and remove it. But so far, fingers crossed, he has not required human intervention due to choking.

Hans is a cute schnauzer name.
I haven't heard of anyone having luck with a special bowl or anything, but I've known people that used the food cube to slow them down. I think the lady I talked to about it had a lab that was retarded like that and she worried that he would get food caught in his windpipe or something the way he gulped it down.

The vet gf suggested spreading food out over cookie sheets or wax paper on the floor so the dog has to walk around to eat the food.
She also said you can do small portions at a time and slowly feed him throughout the day. Or you could try wetting the dry kibble before he eats with water.

ein volk. ein reich. EIN HANS! i dunno who he was named after. i assume it's because he's a german breed that the lady gave him a german name.
anyway i got him a bowl with separators in it. he has to eat around them and it has slowed him down so much he no longer chokes on his food.

in my experience, snarfing food is an issue with multiple dogs in the household, or sometimes just multiple pets. They seem to be afraid if they don't eat it as fast as possible that the other animals will eat it.
We just have food dispensers at our house, the cats do just fine with it, the dog overeats a bit but not seriously so.
