it does not stop that stuff from growing. i had a fountain feeder and believe me, i was cleaning it every 4 days because the slime in the basin was out of control if i didn't.
well I'm glad I didn't buy one then, I don't worry about the cats if I forget to fill the water because they can go outside, but the dog will drink out of the toilet.

it grew slime faster than a bowl of water would.  no joke. i can leave a bowl of water on the counter for my cats, unattended for over a week and it's not slimey. fountain water basin? slime infested cesspit in 4 days.

We have a cat water fountain that never slimes up. I clean it once a month and only then because of the lime in our water. It's probably the lizards. Kill them.

I find that they work all right (the ones with a separator or whatever in the middle) or also you can put in a metal ball straight into the food, assuming dry, that will get in the way and slow him down, too.

Yeah I was going to say you can add things to his current bowl to help him. Depending on how big his mouth is, golf balls, rocks, etc. So he has to move them around to eat his food.
