its a shared air shaft. one of the frosted windows is the bathroom for the apt. the other window you see is another houses. this way you have more windows in the house.

yeah most of america has huge rooms etc.. but mostly wasted space. think about how much more it would cost to heat and cool rooms etc.. how many times do people actually use stupid dinning rooms?
