I always thought (up until the 2000's anyway) that AC's art direction made up for the poor graphics. I'm not a art person so my vocabulary is failing me, but despite having these poor tools to work with devs made every place in the game with an amazing attention to detail (that NPC not withstanding, lol). I really liked the mix of the three culture's medieval architecture and Dereth's high-fantasy-but-not-over-the-top style also. EQ graphics always struck me as too bright and goofy, their attempts at epic set pieces transparent and immersion-breaking.
