There's no manipulation or conspiracy here, all the news is doing is covering their ass by not playing devil's advocate for what very much resembles a Nazi symbol. I don't know if you'll ever realize that the MMS networks are businesses first and foremost, or you'll stick to the whole "malicious, focused propaganda machines".
Considering the public position the Army has taken (the symbol is not acceptable) there's no need to defend its use in a basic story summary article.

look, this is a stupid story about a vector graphic of the letter S
should the scout snipers have used comic sans for the font?
i mean City of Heroes was banned for release in germany because of the law they have their that explicitly forbades the public display of Nazi regalia.

They should have used anything but lightning bolt symbols that look exactly the same as the SS's, except for slightly different angles.
US Soldiers are also diplomats/representatives to the world, using imagery like this is a no-no.
