I just have to question whether the average investor has the diligence and dedication to pick individual stocks or industries and come anywhere close to reliably matching the market let alone out performing it.

even the majority of mutual fund investors do not have the ability to pick what industries & stocks are going to match the market. over longer periods of time (20 years), 75% to 80% of actively managed funds perform worse (after expenses) than whole market index funds.

True, but there's always a certain level of "I'm smarter and more agile" that spites the statistics.

I'm with you, though. I think the average investor is wasting time and money trying to actively manage their account. I know I don't have the time to do my due diligence in picking a stock. Index stock and bond funds with the ratio adjusted in accordance with the market and a little in a gambling fund just to satisfy the innate desire to actively manage. Easier to stay disciplined with the real investment when you have an outlet for that desire to hit it big...

How about GM? Regardless of what company it is, owning 1 company is much riskier than owning thousands. You have a chance of doing much much better than the market, and you also stand a chance of losing everything.

Of course if it's a small % of your whole portfolio it's all well and good, I've got a few finance and tech sector individual holdings. But more than 10% of your portfolio in 1 company is starting to get too risky IMHO.

I'll support a team financially when bleacher seats don't cost more than $100, and players don't make millions.

As much as I love the packers, the stock is kind of a waste of money. Sure you can go to a stock holders meeting if you really want.

Other then that you just have a pretty thing to hang on the wall.

So, it's more of a donation without tax benefit than a purchase of stock?

Thats not really 100% true, but mostly yeah. A lot of whether or not you lost depends on the offerings in the plans and whether or not they were actively managed by the participant. A big part of the problem with 401K's is that people just dump money into them from day 1 and dont pay any attention to the actual investments offered in the plans. If people would have actively managed their plans they probably could have at least come out even at worst. Probably an entirely different thread topic though as thats way more complicated than that and probably easier for me to say since I work for a financial joint.

I take you don't subscribe to the index funds split between bonds and stocks strategy for the average investor?

It depends on the situation, age, how many years you have left, the market indicators etc etc...

In either case I dont subscribe to just dumping your money into a bond/stock split from day 1 and just leaving it their till retirement no.

back in 2007 I doubled my money in my 401k over the course of 1 year, even though everyone else was losing money. I stuck to the funds that focused on pharmaceuticals as a large part of the portfolio and it paid off.

of course, it would have been way more awesome if I'd had more money in there.

It is better to beg forgiveness than ask for permission!
