Those that left it in the diversified 401K funds love lost hundreds of thousands.
then those funds weren't diversified, or they are not continuously contributing and staying the course

Hell no, I only own Boeing stock. I bought it at $32 a share.
shoulda bought ford like i did! (i only bought $200 worth of it though, kicking myself for that )
or just stick it all in something like VTSMX
The only single stock that was offered in our plan is Boeing. I waited until it dropped as far as I thought it would drop.
And, I think people everywhere have lost money on 401K plans in the last 10 years.

Even diversified funds can rise and fall. In the long run it should work out, but you have to make sure you have the time to wait it out.
Probably worse companies to invest in than Boeing, especially if you work there. Still probably a good idea to spread things out...

i am not allowed to comment on your investment choices, however on a general note, buying on emotion and not diversifying is typically a good way to lose money in the long term.
packers stock is a buy in to the team with particular side benefits that we most likely will not use.

Thats not really 100% true, but mostly yeah. A lot of whether or not you lost depends on the offerings in the plans and whether or not they were actively managed by the participant. A big part of the problem with 401K's is that people just dump money into them from day 1 and dont pay any attention to the actual investments offered in the plans. If people would have actively managed their plans they probably could have at least come out even at worst. Probably an entirely different thread topic though as thats way more complicated than that and probably easier for me to say since I work for a financial joint.

And sometimes people actively manage them and jump ship too soon and lose even faster. When Boeing lost the tanker bid in 2008 Boeing stock was over $100 per share. And it plunged. Then, the announcement of the 787 being delayed dropped it more. And the market in general just crashed. When it dropped below $40 a share I thought it was time to buy. I was hoping we would win the tanker bid. I knew eventually the 787 and 747-8 would be delivered. So I dumped everything into it. Now it's near $80. I will eventually sell it....but not yet.

I take you don't subscribe to the index funds split between bonds and stocks strategy for the average investor?
