Thats not really 100% true, but mostly yeah. A lot of whether or not you lost depends on the offerings in the plans and whether or not they were actively managed by the participant. A big part of the problem with 401K's is that people just dump money into them from day 1 and dont pay any attention to the actual investments offered in the plans. If people would have actively managed their plans they probably could have at least come out even at worst. Probably an entirely different thread topic though as thats way more complicated than that and probably easier for me to say since I work for a financial joint.
I take you don't subscribe to the index funds split between bonds and stocks strategy for the average investor?
It depends on the situation, age, how many years you have left, the market indicators etc etc...
In either case I dont subscribe to just dumping your money into a bond/stock split from day 1 and just leaving it their till retirement no.

Fair enough. Definitely seems silly to not pay attention to how your money is doing and at least adjusting the split between stocks and bonds to reflect the market.
I just have to question whether the average investor has the diligence and dedication to pick individual stocks or industries and come anywhere close to reliably matching the market let alone out performing it. Most people seem to spend more time researching a TV or motherboard than they do their stocks and invest more on whim and emotion...

And, I think people everywhere have lost money on 401K plans in the last 10 years.
not if they are diversified and continually investing. investing $10k per year in VTSMX (total stock market) from jan 2002 to jan 2012 would be worth $126k currently, and investing $10k per year in VBMFX (total bond market) from jan 2002 to jan 2012 would be worth $136k currently.

even the majority of mutual fund investors do not have the ability to pick what industries & stocks are going to match the market. over longer periods of time (20 years), 75% to 80% of actively managed funds perform worse (after expenses) than whole market index funds.

I hardly think Cutt is buying a large amount of moneys worth of the stock I figured one or two shares just for fun so he can put the certificate up on his wall.
I don't see it any different than buying a new computer or piece of art work. It's something fun that will make him happy and get to be put on the wall.
