but here we have a single day thats been set aside for expressing a higher emotion like love and you get people sh*tting on it for one reason or another.
FORGET the who or why the day exists and run with it!

Well, Fozzie, traditionally Valentine's day is for couples and less a celebration of love for everyone (at least that's how we treat it culturally) but I don't see any reason not to take the day to express love for SOMEONE, like you said- family, friends, etc.

check the valentines day card isle and you will find cards for Moms, Dads, Kids, ... Friends. And thats not a call to buy them all cards (though Im SURE the Hallmark company would love it if you did), its an invitation to reach out and connect with those people and reaffirm that you care back.
If a person is so destitute as to have nobody left in the world that cares about them, THAT is a person worthy of pity.

getting a cuddle from a sweetie is definitely nice, I get that... but recognize that its a self-created boundary to the day though. All you have to do is lift your vision a little bit to see beyond that and all kinds of possibilities open up.
The day is (always) your own, make it what you will.
