How come the non religious person never has an epiphany and becomes a hardcore Catholic?
It's always the televangelist/mega church denominations.
I guess these charismatic preachers (salesmen) are doing a good job coaxing people who are down on their luck to depart with some money and become "born-again".
The pope can only perform so many miracles, while there is a whole army of televangelists.
I think it has something to do with the fact that most people who "find god" lead totally undisciplined failure lives before hand and the only way to keep themselves disciplined is with a fundamentalist type religion.
You know how addicts say once an addict you are always an addict? I think it is the same way. If you don't go "fundamentalist" with all the rules fundamentalists require and follow it to a T, you end up falling off the band wagon.
Keep in mind that ultimately the reason why fundamentalism fails is because it can not answer the simple question of "what if I am wrong in my belief".

I survived to the end and got nothing out of it, but hey.

They're not. The only ones you hear about are the fundamentalists.. because, well, isn't that their whole point? (To raise 'awareness'
Edit: I didn't read the thread before posting, so, what Rhodoman said.

Lo! Those who disbelieve Our revelations, We shall expose them to the Fire. As often as their skins are consumed We shall exchange them for fresh skins that they may taste the torment. Lo! Allah is ever Mighty, Wise.

one reason is what the reason they turned to god in the first place. Religion becomes a way of coping with something really tragic in someones life that more often then not someone can't cope with. Other reason is they feel guilty for whatever reason for not always being a christian or straying from their so called path. Maybe its also finding or being a part of something like a church or fellowship and that filled a void that wasn't there.
The problem is if their is a god everything we know about it is wrong and theirs no proof their is a god in the christian sense then their is that Odin didn't walk around. That being the case most of those people are sick in the head and society encourages because people are making money,

I would like to know instead, why is it when people criticize the religious, they focus on Christians. They've been persecuted for 2000 years. Enough is enough, leave them alone.

^ You're right. No one ever criticizes the Jews or Muslims.

That's all well and good, but why "the earth is flat, evolution is a lie, and god tells me things fundamentalism"?
And it isn't just because only fundamentalists are vocal. There are plenty of people who I've known either first hand or second, that have suddenly become religious. I didn't find out by them knocking on my door selling bibles, I found out through a close friend or relative. In any case, they ALL became fundamentalists.

There are plenty of converted Catholics. It happens all of the time. Both from prior non believers and from other faiths. They, like a number of other large religious groups, just tend to not be as loud about it as some of the more evangelical fundamentalist groups. Not saying that many of them aren't hardcore (oh boy have I ever had debates and lectures regarding what constitutes a good catholic from adult converts) They just tend typically to be quieter and less public about it. I understand that this is a similar thing with Jews and many of the older and less fire and brimstone christian faiths. (You don't typically see hellfire and brimstone Lutherans or Episcopalians either. All of them get regular converts. Some folks actually prefer a low key private interaction with God.)

:\ I never said there are no converts.
I'm referring to the people that suddenly dedicate their lives to god. Most people that convert to Catholicism do so because of marriage or other necessity, they may not ever enter a church after that.
